Reality Always Wins has released another video that slams the notion that a nation’s homicide rate is directly correlated to the number of people who own guns.
To make the point, the video compares the gun ownership rate and homicide rates of two nations with very different notions on the right to bear arms.
In the United States, according to census data, there are just over 300 million people residing in the country and estimates conclude that there are just over 300 million firearms. This puts the ratio of people to guns at approximately 1:1. The 300 million guns are considering all types of firearms including handguns, shotguns, and rifles.
In the UK, where firearms are heavily restricted, there is roughly 6.7 guns per every one hundred citizens.
As Leftists would like to continually point out, the gun homicide rate in the US is much higher than that of the UK, which goes towards their theory that more guns equals more gun violence.
However, the video notes, there is a third nation with a gun ownership rate that is roughly in the middle of that of the US and the UK. There is an estimated 1 gun for every two members of the population in Switzerland.
In theory, notes the video, because Switzerland’s gun ownership rate is in the middle of the gun ownership rate of the US and the UK, it would stand to reason that the homicide rate would be located somewhere in the middle as well.
After all, the Left is maintaining that there is a direct correlation between the number of guns in a nation and the number of gun homicides.
However, Switzerland’s gun homicide rate is a mere 0.52 per 100,000 people and it’s overall homicide rate is even lower than the UK’s.
You can watch the video below, and be sure to share this with any friends or co-workers that you may have who believe that the number of guns correlate to the amount of gun homicides in a nation.
Side Note: After this video was published, numerous Leftists came out of the woodwork to claim that it was misleading.
Their argument was that Switzerland has a low gun homicide rate, despite their fairly high gun ownership rate, because the government does not allow its citizens to own ammo.
As evidence, they point to a 2007 piece of legislation that allowed Swiss militia army soldiers to bring their weapons home with them, but required the ammo to be stored in central arsenals.
While this argument looks great on a meme on the Occupy Democrats website, in reality, it has nothing to do with the statistics.
The 2007 legislation restricted ammunition that is provided by the government, which is to say paid for by the government, from being taken home.
Citizens are still free to purchase their own ammunition and keep it in their homes.
